If you're replacing a gas heater and have limited space on your equipment pad, the choice usually comes down to the Pentair MasterTemp and the Jandy JXi. Both are ultra-compact, high-efficiency, low-NOx heaters.
Pentair MasterTemp
The MasterTemp has been the industry benchmark for compact heaters for years. It's known for rapid heat-up times and a highly reliable cupro-nickel heat exchanger option. It features a digital display that rotates for easy viewing regardless of plumbing orientation.
Jandy JXi
The Jandy JXi is slightly newer and was designed with a footprint that makes it an easy drop-in replacement for older MasterTemp models. Its standout feature is the optional 'VersaFlo' integrated bypass.
The VersaFlo Advantage
When a heater is not firing, water still flows through the heat exchanger, creating hydraulic resistance and slowly eroding the copper tubes via chemical wear. Jandy's VersaFlo technology automatically bypasses the heat exchanger when the heater is off. This saves pump energy and significantly extends the life of the heat exchanger.
The Verdict
Both heaters are excellent. The Pentair MasterTemp has a slightly longer track record of reliability. However, if you opt for the Jandy JXi with the VersaFlo bypass, the long-term energy savings and protection of the heat exchanger give it a distinct technological edge.
